Lake Vyrnwy: Beauty, Engineering, and the Story Beneath the Water
Lake Vyrnwy showing the water tower and the road over the dam. Photography by Janice Gill Some places are beautiful at first glance. Lake Vyrnwy is one of them. The sweep of water, the wooded hills, the dramatic stone dam, and the fairytale-like straining tower give it an almost theatrical presence. But what makes Lake Vyrnwy especially compelling is that its beauty is layered. It is a place of quiet views and wildlife, but also of Victorian ambition, engineering ingenuity, a

How to Style a Gallery Wall (Without It Looking Cluttered)
Collected art and personal objects as a gallery wall. Photo by Manja Vitolic on Unsplash A gallery wall can be one of the most beautiful ways to display art at home. It adds personality, creates a focal point, and allows you to combine pieces in a way that feels more collected than formal. But there’s a fine line between curated and cluttered. The difference usually isn’t the artwork itself. It’s the way it’s arranged. The good news is that creating a gallery wall doesn’t ha

How to Create a Calm, Nature-Inspired Living Room
Light, airy space and calm reflective water bring quiet atmosphere to this painting of the River Severn in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Artwork and photography by Janice Gill There’s a difference between a room that looks put together… and one that feels calm the moment you walk into it. Often, that feeling doesn’t come from adding more. It comes from choosing more carefully. A quieter palette.Softer textures.Artwork that settles into the space rather than competing with it. Start

Shrewsbury Abbey: History, Hidden Details & What to Look For
The beautiful arched window of Shrewsbury Abbey is the first thing you see after crossing the English Bridge over the River Severn. Art work by Janice Gill 2026 There are places that quietly hold centuries within them. Shrewsbury Abbey is one of those places. At first glance, it’s a beautiful red sandstone church, slightly set apart from the town centre. But once you begin to look more closely, you realise you’re standing in what was once one of the most powerful religious si

How to Choose Art You Won’t Get Tired Of (A Simple Guide)
Lake Vyrnwy Calm Water. The overall impression of this view is of a calm, peaceful day, but it still has plenty of interest with the surface ripples and reflection and interest in the sky. I love it as it is one of my favourite local landscapes. One of the most common worries when buying art is this: “What if I love it now… but not in a few months?” It’s a fair question. Art isn’t just decoration—it becomes part of your everyday environment. The good news is that some artwork

Framed vs Unframed Prints: Which Should You Choose?
A4 print, mounted and framed to match the decor. When buying wall art, one of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to choose a framed or unframed print . At first glance, it seems like a small detail—but it can completely change how the artwork feels in your space. So which is better? The answer depends on what you want your room to look and feel like. What’s the Difference? Framed prints arrive ready to hang, with the artwork already mounted and enclosed in a frame Un

How to Choose the Right Size Art for Your Wall (Simple Guide)
A3 print, framed and hung in a light-filled reading corner. The artwork is about two-thirds the size of the chair and table combined, and the framing blends with the chair and objects on the table. Artwork by Janice Gill 2024. Choosing the right size artwork for your wall can completely transform a room—but it’s one of the most common things people get wrong. Too small, and the piece feels lost. Too large, and it overwhelms the space. The good news? There’s a simple way to ge

What Is a Giclée Print? (And Why It Matters for Your Artwork)
Little Owl with Ladybird. Photography and Artwork by Janice Gill If you’ve been looking at art prints online, you’ve probably come across the term giclée print . It sounds technical—maybe even a little mysterious. But what does it actually mean? And more importantly, does it really make a difference? Let’s break it down simply. What Is a Giclée Print? A giclée print is a high-quality fine art print made using specialist inkjet printers and archival inks. The word “giclée” co

Buying Fine Art Prints Online: What to Look For (Before You Buy)
Red squirrel eating Sunflower seeds - watercolour painting from my original photography. Artwork and photography by Janice Gill Buying art online is a completely different experience from seeing it in a gallery. You can’t feel the paper. You can’t see how the light catches it. And you can’t step back to see how it sits in a room. So how do you know you’re choosing something truly worth having? Here’s a simple guide to help you buy with confidence. 1. How to Choose Art for Your Home
Wall art ideas for living rooms, bedrooms and calm interiors Introduction Choosing art for your home can feel surprisingly difficult. It’s not usually a lack of options—there’s often too much to choose from. What makes it harder is knowing what will actually work in your space. But the answer isn’t to look harder. It’s to look differently. Rather than starting with the artwork itself, it helps to begin with how you want your home to feel . Start with the Feeling, Not the Artw

Not Every Piece Needs to Become a Print
Introduction Not every piece I make is meant to be finished. Some are simply a way of finding out what happens next. Letting the Materials Lead Recently, I’ve been exploring a series of fluid, mixed media pieces on canvas. Rather than working toward a specific outcome, I wanted to see what would happen if I allowed the paint to move more freely—following its own direction rather than trying to control it too tightly. The result was a set of pieces that feel more like experime

Wonderful Wales Coast Path
The weather forecast wasn't promising - overcast all day with the possibility of brighter spells and showers. In other words - be prepared for anything! Our plan for the day was to walk from Aberystwyth to Borth along the Wales Coast Path which happened to be celebrating it's 10 year anniversary on the day we went, May 5th 2022. From car park in Aber to the railway station in Borth, the distance covered was 10.5Km (6.5 miles) with 3 notable hills, including Constitution Hill.
