Framed vs Unframed Prints: Which Should You Choose?

When buying wall art, one of the first decisions you’ll face is whether to choose a framed or unframed print.

At first glance, it seems like a small detail—but it can completely change how the artwork feels in your space.

So which is better?

The answer depends on what you want your room to look and feel like.

What’s the Difference?

  • Framed prints arrive ready to hang, with the artwork already mounted and enclosed in a frame

  • Unframed prints are supplied as the print only, allowing you to choose your own frame and style

Both options have their advantages—it’s simply a matter of what suits you best.

Why Choose a Framed Print?

Framed prints are all about ease and immediacy.

They’re ideal if you:

  • want something ready to hang straight away

  • prefer a polished, finished look

  • don’t want to spend time choosing a frame

A well-chosen frame can also enhance the artwork, giving it presence and structure.

Why Choose an Unframed Print?

Unframed prints offer flexibility—and for many people, that’s a big advantage.

They allow you to:

  • choose a frame that suits your decor perfectly

  • match existing frames in your home

  • change the style over time if your space evolves

This makes them a great choice if you enjoy styling your space yourself.

Which Looks Better?

Neither is inherently better—it depends on the setting.

  • Framed prints tend to feel more complete and refined

  • Unframed prints can feel more adaptable and personal

In modern interiors, unframed prints paired with carefully chosen frames often create the most cohesive look.

What About Cost?

Framed prints are usually more expensive because they include:

  • the frame itself

  • mounting and assembly

  • additional packaging for protection

Unframed prints are more budget-friendly upfront, and give you control over how much you spend on framing.

A Simple Way to Decide

Ask yourself:

👉 Do I want convenience or flexibility?

  • Convenience → framed

  • Flexibility → unframed

There’s no wrong choice—just what works best for your space and your style.

I'm enjoying your blogs about art. Tomorrow I'm posting a blog about a room I reorganized and added three photographs I enlarged and framed. However when I hung them I probably didn't follow your suggestions on choosing the right size art for the wall.
