Mindfulness and the Magic of Painting.

October 17, 2017

"a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique."

In recent years the awareness of the practise of "mindfulness" has grown from it's Buddhist roots to spread across much of the globe. It is all about finding that tranquil state where you are just "in the moment" and is a therapeutic technique used to help stress and anxiety.

Being creative is a great way to access that state and a rapidly growing industry has been spawned providing, for example, adult colouring books. Colouring works well to access this meditative state as it is repetitive and simple to do. The colours you use are likely to be one's you are attracted to, providing a sense of pleasure and making it easier to stay in that moment.

The same effect is true of many creative endeavours once you are past the learning and concentrating phase. As a painter, I like to use the colours left over on my palette at the end of a painting to just play. I especially like watching watercolours move and mix. I start with very wet paper and add almost neat colours, experimenting with mixes and rediscovering the childlike joy and awe of watching the magic happen on the paper.
